Highlights of Doha, Qatar. Tourist Landmarks to visit in one day.

We visited Qatar in 2022, for the FIFA World Cup:

The running giner in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup 2022. With the real FIFA football trophy, in an exhibition.
This is the REAL World Cup Trophy!

But as we had not run in it, or had time to properly enjoy it, we decided to come back. This allowed us to squeeze in a couple of very cool runs! 🏃‍♂️🇶🇦

One during the day…

And another one during the night!

Qatar’s most famous running route delivered what we expected, and we ran both during the day and after sunset, to enjoy the magnificent view of Doha’s city centre, filled with sky scrapers, along the famous Corniche. 🌇🌊

TLDR; “too long, didn’t read”

  • I just want to run! Take me to RUN.
  • I have 1 minute. Take me to USEFUL INFORMATION.
  • Running is my excuse for travelling. Take me to TRIP.
  • I want to know what to read in the plane. Take me to ONE BOOK.

🌍 The Trip 📷: What to see in Doha in a day

Doha is compact and has a very good transport system, so you can see most of its famous landmarks in a couple of days, or, if you are in a hurry, even in one 🙂

This is what we did! 🚇😊

The Corniche: Doha’s Waterfront Heart 🌊🏙️

Stretching gracefully along Doha Bay, the Corniche is the perfect place to begin your day in Qatar. This palm-lined promenade runs for about 7 kilometers, making it ideal for both short recovery runs and longer out-and-back sessions. It offers sweeping views of the West Bay skyline, where glass towers shimmer against the blue of the Gulf. 🌴🏃‍♀️

Walking here gives you an immediate sense of Doha’s balance between modern ambition and relaxed coastal life, especially in the early morning when the city feels calm and spacious. Early hours are also popular with runners and walkers trying to avoid the heat, even in winter. 🌅🚶‍♂️

During the FIFA World Cup, the Corniche transformed into a global gathering point. Fans from every continent strolled the waterfront draped in flags, spontaneous celebrations erupted at sunset, and the skyline became a glowing backdrop for nightly festivities ⚽🎉

Katara Cultural Village: Art, Heritage, and the Sea 🎭🎨

Katara Cultural Village is a celebration of creativity and heritage set right by the sea. The name “Katara” comes from an ancient term for Qatar found on historical maps, and the area was designed to preserve and showcase cultural identity. 🗺️🌊

Home to galleries, theaters, mosques, and open-air spaces, Katara feels like a curated journey through Arab culture and global art influences. You can explore exhibitions, admire intricate architecture, or simply relax on the beach, all within a beautifully designed cultural hub. 🕌🎨

During the World Cup, Katara came alive with performances, fan events, and cultural showcases from around the world. Music echoed through the amphitheater, traditional dances captivated international audiences, and food stalls reflected a truly global celebration. 🎶⚽

Visiting today still carries that spirit of openness, where culture and community take center stage. 🌍✨

The Presidential Palace (Amiri Diwan): Power and Elegance 🏰✨

The Presidential Palace, also known as the Amiri Diwan, stands as a symbol of Qatar’s leadership and national identity. Built on a site that has housed seats of power for generations, it represents continuity as much as authority. 🇶🇦🏛️

Overlooking the Corniche, its grand architecture and manicured surroundings convey authority, tradition, and refinement. While access to the interior is limited, viewing the palace from outside offers insight into the country’s governance and deep respect for heritage. 👑🌿

The World Cup Stadium (Lusail Iconic Stadium): A Modern Landmark ⚽🏟️

No visit to Qatar is complete without seeing one of its World Cup stadiums, and the Lusail Iconic Stadium stands out as the most symbolic. It hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final, making it one of the most important sports venues in modern football history. 🌍🏆

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. South Korea versus Ghana Match.
This was not the final but good enough!

This architectural masterpiece was designed to resemble a traditional Arabic bowl, glowing gold under the desert sun. Even from the outside, it feels monumental, representing Qatar’s ambition, innovation, and ability to host events on a truly global scale. ✨🏜️

We were there to watch the North Korea vs Ghana match, and the atmosphere inside the stadium was unforgettable. North Korea’s disciplined style of play added tension and unpredictability to the game, while Ghana’s supporters brought drums, songs, and waves of color, filling the stands with energy. 🥁🎶

Seriously: I still find myself chanting the “GhanaGhanaGhana” song they kept repeating, especially in the public transport afterwards, because they won!! 🏆😂

🏃‍♀️ The Runs 🏃‍♂️

First Run: Day

We set off for our first run at lunchtime. We normally run at sunrise, but in January, the temperature and conditions at lunchtime were so great for running that there was no need to wake up too early 😀
January is one of the best months for running in Doha, with mild temperatures and low humidity compared to the rest of the year. ☀️🏃‍♂️

We left our hotel and headed for the Corniche. The first thing to take into account in Qatar is that distances are bigger than you would expect. The streets are wide; I am talking highway-wide standards.

Any building is massive.
We ended up running 15 kilometers in total, when we had thought about an easy 5k run 😂🏙️

Flag Plaza and the National Museum

First stop, a banner display where we ran multiple times, especially around Spain and Qatar’s flag. Flag Plaza is actually one of the largest open flag displays in the world, symbolizing Qatar’s international connections. 🇪🇸🇶🇦

Next to it, the futuristic National Museum. Designed by Jean Nouvel, the building is inspired by the desert rose crystal formation, making it one of the most iconic museums in the Middle East. 🌸🏛️

We ran past signs for pedestrians featuring a man in a thobe, the national dress. We found it very peculiar. And, by the way, I also had a little problem – I hit my head against one of those signals! It really hurt 😂🤕

MIA Park

Then we ran back to enter Al Doha via MIA Park. A perfect park for running, with paths for pedestrians and bicycles, and a lot of shade. Well kept, with beautiful flowers and trees. 🌳🏃‍♀️

Still inside the park, we progressed in an avenue filled with palm trees, and reached the Museum of Islamic Art. The museum, designed by I. M. Pei, is considered one of the most important collections of Islamic art in the world. 🌴🏛️

East Mound – Skyline View Point

We ran along the promenade until we reached the end of the park, just after “The 7 Sculpture” by Richard Serra.

The sculpture represents the importance of the number seven in Islamic culture and is one of Serra’s most impressive outdoor works. 🎨7️⃣

There, we saw a café full of locals who were trying to enjoy the views despite the strong wind. A

nd after that, we went up the East Mound-Skyline View Point. This area is very popular with locals and tourists because of the magnificent views of West Bay. 🌬️🌆

It was windy and quite cold, and the water was rough. Such a great atmosphere! 🌊❄️

We decided to come back at sunset, and we ran back to the hotel to complete a 9 km loop. A circuit which I can only recommend! 🏃‍♂️✅

Second Run: Night

Well, more a sunset run, although by the time we reached our hotel again, it was indeed night!
We ran 7 kilometers again, although we didn’t want to overdo it. Again: it is very easy to run long distances in this city! 🌙🏃‍♀️

Skyline at Night

We went back to the East Mound-Skyline View Point. It turned out to be a great idea because the view of the skyscrapers being lit up is as magnificent as that of the sun setting behind the National Palace. 🌃✨

Many locals were there to enjoy the sunset, taking pictures and selfies. The café “Karak Mahil” was full! Karak tea is a local favorite, and stopping for one after a run is almost a ritual. 📸☕

Many dhows, Qatar’s traditional wooden boats, with the Qatari flag were doing sunset cruises, some of them illuminated with flashy decorations (which I did not like specially, I admit). 🚤🇶🇦

Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center (Fanar Masjid)

And to finish our scenic run, we ran to the Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center, with its beautiful spiral minaret, inspired by the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq. 🕌🌙

It was beautifully illuminated at night. Many shops and a mall around it made this area lively and interesting, a perfect final stretch for a night run in Doha. 🛍️✨

One book

“The Corsair” by Abdulaziz Al-Mahmoud

This historical novel is written by a Qatari author and is deeply rooted in the Gulf’s past, much of which shapes modern Doha’s identity.

Al-Mahmoud’s storytelling gives readers insight into pre-oil life in the region: the honor codes, rivalries, and survival strategies that still echo in Doha’s cultural memory. Reading this novel while visiting the city adds depth to landmarks like the Corniche and the old districts, where the sea once defined daily life.

Recommended book for Doha, Qatar: "The Corsair" by Abdulaziz Al-Mahmoud

Plot Summary: Set in the 19th century, it tells the story of Rahmah ibn Jabir Al-Jalahimah, a legendary (and controversial) Gulf figure, against the backdrop of regional politics, maritime trade, and shifting power.

While much of the action unfolds at sea, the cultural and historical foundations it explores are essential to understanding Doha and Qatar today.
