And it wakes up running \ud83c\udfc3\u200d\u2642\ufe0f\ud83c\udf05.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 6:20 a.m., we laced up for a 6-kilometer route along the iconic Manila Bay and into the heart of the city\u2019s historic streets. Between the golden glow of the sunrise, the smell of sizzling street food, and the unexpected mix of sea views, colonial landmarks, and bustling local life, this wasn\u2019t just a workout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a moving tour through the soul of the Philippine capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TLDR; &#8220;too long, didn&#8217;t read&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I just want to run! So pack your shoes, charge your watch, and discover a city that never stops moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"TripManila\"><strong>\ud83c\udf0d The Trip \ud83d\udcf7<\/strong>: What to see in Manila in a day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But, first, a little bit of travel logistics \u2708\ufe0f\ud83e\uddf3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No Visa but an eTravel Form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We arrived at 18:30 and we passed immigration relatively fast. There were no large queues, but we had to fill in an \u201ceTravel\u201d questionnaire which was free, scanning a QR code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t know about it, I had only researched that there was no visa necessary for Spaniards. Anyway, it was easy enough and we entered the country without much hassle \ud83d\ude0c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had been raining \ud83c\udf27\ufe0f and it was hot and humid \ud83c\udf21\ufe0f: 19h and loads of traffic \ud83d\ude97. The city was illuminated chaotically  but there were some areas where public lights were not working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But from the beginning, what I liked were the metal mini buses, so tiny and colourful and filled with people: The Jeepneys! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I saw one that was decorated with the Ferrari colours \ud83d\ude42&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Jeepneys<\/strong> \ud83d\ude8d\u2728<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the kings of Manila\u2019s streets. Bright, loud, and made of metal.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-4-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"Jeepsneys in Manila, the Philippines. They started as surplus U.S. military jeeps left after World War II. Locals extended the bodies, added benches, and turned them into cheap public transport. I loved their decorations, with chrome, painted murals, slogans, religious icons, and names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every jeepney is unique! A mix of art and vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hotel Rizal and the Spanish-American War<\/strong> \ud83c\udfe8<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We stayed in the elegant and glamorous <a href=\"https:\/\/rizalparkhotel.hotel-manila.com\/\">Hotel Rizal<\/a>, which I had chosen because of its location: there were good running routes around, and it was also close to Intramuros, which we planned to visit the day after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I loved it from the very first moment we entered \u2764\ufe0f. I was captivated by its elegant fa\u00e7ade, lobby, and interiors \u2728.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-6-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"Hotel Rizal, in Manila, the Philippines. The current building, designed by architect William E. Parsons, was completed in 1911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, wow &#8211; so it turned out I was in a building with some story related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War\">Spanish-American War,<\/a> which I had researched thoroughly before travelling. Being a Spaniard, you know\u2026 \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding this, I recommend this youtube documentary: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7fcqhU-23TA\">How the US stole the Philipines<\/a>\u201d &#8211; it is very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More Than Miles: Exploring Intramuros<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only have 24 hours in Manila, the best way to dive into the city\u2019s history and culture is by visiting <strong>Intramuros<\/strong> \u2013 the famous \u201cWalled City.\u201d \ud83c\udff0 This historic district is packed with centuries-old churches, Spanish-era fortifications, and gardens that blend the past with the present.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-576x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Intramuros in Manila, the Philippines, as part of our running guide\" class=\"wp-image-8393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-576x1024.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-169x300.jpeg 169w, https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-768x1365.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-864x1536.jpeg 864w, https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1-7x12.jpeg 7w, https:\/\/the-running-ginger.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025_08-Manila-Highlights-8-1.jpeg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the route we followed, and it turned out to be the perfect way to spend the day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tricycle Tour Around Intramuros<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We kicked off the morning with a tricycle tour \u2013 a fun, convenient, and very local way to see the highlights. \ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udca8 The driver would take us from site to site, explain a bit of history, let us explore and snap photos, and then continue to the next stop. Simple, stress-free, and entertaining (especially weaving through Manila traffic in such a quirky vehicle!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Puerta Real<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first stop was Puerta Real, or \u201cRoyal Gate.\u201d Originally built in the 1600s for ceremonial processions, it was reconstructed after WWII. Today, it opens into charming gardens often used for weddings and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Baluarte de San Diego<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Intramuros\u2019 oldest stone defenses, Baluarte de San Diego started as a circular watchtower in the late 1500s. Surrounded by lush gardens, it feels part historical landmark, part urban escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Walls &amp; Ramparts of Intramuros<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking along the massive stone walls built by the Spaniards in the 1500s was a highlight. From there, we had stunning panoramic views: the timeless walls of Intramuros on one side, and Manila\u2019s glassy skyscrapers on the other. One curious cultural note: we noticed many women sporting very pale makeup \u2013 a popular beauty trend in Manila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also returned to <strong>San Agustin Church<\/strong>, this time exploring its peaceful convent museum. Built in the 16th century as a citadel, it later became infamous as a prison. National hero Jos\u00e9 Rizal spent his final days here before his execution. Today, the Rizal Shrine Museum inside tells his powerful story through personal items and artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705 <strong>Travel Tip:<\/strong> Intramuros can be hot and humid, and rain showers pop up often. Bring water, sunscreen, and either a raincoat or umbrella \u2013 locals actually use umbrellas more for sun than for rain!<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Spending a day in Intramuros is like stepping back in time while still being in the heart of modern Manila. If you only have one day in the city, this is the experience you shouldn\u2019t miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"RunManila\"><strong>\ud83c\udfc3\u200d\u2640\ufe0f The Run \ud83c\udfc3\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We set off for our morning run at 6:20 a.m., thinking we were getting an early start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as we stepped out of the hotel and turned onto the wide, palm-lined Roxas Boulevard \ud83c\udf34, it became clear that Manila was already wide awake. We didn\u2019t stop for photos, recalling a similar situation in Djibouti when cameras weren\u2019t welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the city setting, the boulevard was lined with lush vegetation \ud83c\udf33, and massive old trees had forced the pavement into uneven ridges. At times, it felt more like running a trail than a city street. People sat patiently on plastic chairs while vendors sold snacks, plush toys \ud83e\uddf8, and all sorts of miscellaneous items. Just beyond the embassy, a massive twin-gun coastal defense cannon sat as a relic of Manila\u2019s wartime history \u2693.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we reached the harbor, a petite but determined policeman barred our entry \u2014 so we detoured and found ourselves running along the rompeolas, the sea wall, which offered sweeping views over Manila Bay \ud83c\udf05. We weren\u2019t alone; plenty of other runners were making the most of the morning light. Runners of all ages passed us in both directions, their gear as professional-looking as any race day. Two ginger cats \ud83d\udc08 lounged lazily near a path, unfazed by the stream of joggers.
